PROJECT DETAILS
The story: This project was a unique opportunity to design a multi-functional garden building that would serve as a dynamic extension of our client’s home. The brief centred on creating a versatile, year-round space – anchored by a state-of-the-art golf simulator – that could also function as a cinema room, entertainment lounge, home gym, and summer retreat. A covered outdoor area was essential, allowing uninterrupted enjoyment of the expansive garden in all seasons. Above all, the space had to reflect the refined aesthetic of the client’s home and provide a welcoming environment for family gatherings across generations.
Interior: The 95 sqm interior is expertly divided into seven defined zones: a golf simulator and cinema suite, bar and kitchenette, lounge area, bathroom, concealed storage room, gym, and a hybrid indoor-outdoor space. Visual continuity is created through a consistent palette and thoughtful material choices. The dark emerald walls of the golf simulator set the tone, bold yet sophisticated, reappearing in the kitchenette to subtly link the zones. Black cabinetry, quartz worktops, and a bespoke hanging bottle rack contribute to a cohesive, dramatic feel, complemented by vertically stacked off-white tiles that delineate the bar area.
A light geometric wallpaper with crisp platinum curves, used both in the lounge and gym, adds a playful rhythm to the interiors while connecting the social spaces. The AV setup in the golf simulator area includes a nearly 3-metre-high screen wall, ceiling-mounted projector, and a surround sound system—ensuring an immersive user experience. Practical considerations weren’t overlooked: a hidden storage room is cleverly disguised behind wallpapered panels, while the bathroom features a pocket door to maximise space. Subtle detailing, like metal-plated sockets and underfloor heating, elevate the tactile experience throughout.
Exterior: The external architecture combines clean lines with a warm material palette. A crisp white render is paired with vertical Cedar cladding, creating a balanced contrast that sits confidently within the landscape. The structure’s orientation and use of no-maintenance anthracite corrugated cladding at the rear and sides ensure both longevity and minimal visual impact from key viewpoints.
Window and door placements were carefully considered to maximise garden views and natural light. Full-width bi-fold doors span the front elevation, seamlessly connecting the indoor space to the landscape. Two additional sets of sliding doors lead to the covered deck and gym, while a rear access door provides functional circulation. Anthracite frames and trims echo the interior colour scheme, creating cohesion between the inside and out. A skylight and tilt-and-turn windows enhance airflow and bring in soft daylight throughout the day. The bespoke timber deck and integrated lighting further emphasise the building’s use as an extension of both home and garden, encouraging year-round enjoyment.
Finished product: This is not your average garden room – it’s a highly considered, multi-purpose family retreat. While the golf simulator was the starting point, the finished space reflects a deeper intention: to bring the family together. Whether hosting a film night, a workout session, or simply relaxing with a view, the building offers something for every generation. We collaborated closely with Golf Swing, the client’s golf simulator specialist, to meet all technical specifications, right down to the power supply and projector placement.
Ultimately, the project is a testament to the client’s refined taste, collaborative spirit, and vision for a space that balances leisure, luxury, and functionality. It’s a bold architectural statement, discreetly nestled in the landscape, that will be enjoyed for many years to come.
